Starter Friends:

I often lay awake at night and think about all those people on my friends list that never chat with me. Who are all these people? Where did they come from? Why are they here?

What do they think about me? Do they think my name suits me? Do they wonder what my voice sounds like? Are they worried if I'm lonely? When they think about me, I want them to really think about me.

I think most of these friends are left over from a starter friends pack that I got when I first signed up for premium membership. It was discontinued and replaced with a vehicle starter pack.

  1. I certainly have many questions about you. I worry. I wonder. I ponder.
I also encourage, cajole and coax.

  2. I think of "starter" as in starter yeast. You have to proof it first to make sure it's still active. You don't just throw it in the flour and hope for the best. You test it with some sugar, salt, oil and a very little blast of warmth. If it comes alive, is all frothy, you continue to the next stage. If it's dead i.e. non responsive then you throw it out and get some fresh yeast. Eventually, you'll end up with one gorgeous loaf of bread. Solid on the outside and soft and warm when you slice into it. And above all, tasty and oh so good for you.

  3. Starter friends usually reply to an IM. They rarely if ever initiate however. Thus, they've never made the leap from starter friend to actual friend.
